Best Time to Visit Hoi An & Da Nang: Weather, Seasons & Travel Tips

Hoi An is one of Vietnam’s most charming destinations, famous for its beautifully preserved Ancient Town, colorful lanterns, local cuisine, peaceful countryside, and nearby beaches.

But when is the best time to visit Hoi An?

The good news is that Hoi An can be visited throughout the year. However, the weather changes significantly between the dry and rainy seasons, so the best time to visit depends on what you want to experience.

Best Time to Visit Hoi An & Da Nang

We are local people here, so we know exactly when is best time for all travelers:  Decmber to April and are two best periods to visit Hoi An.

During these months, the weather is generally warm and pleasant, with lower humidity and less rainfall. It is a great time for walking around the Ancient Town, cycling through the countryside, visiting Tra Que Vegetable Village, taking a basket boat ride in Cam Thanh, and exploring nearby attractions.

May to July can also be a good time to visit if you enjoy sunny weather and beach activities. However, temperatures can be quite high, especially around midday.

From August to November, Hoi An becomes wetter, with a higher chance of rain and occasional storms. The rainy season can still offer a unique experience, especially for travelers who enjoy quieter streets and a more atmospheric side of the Ancient Town.

Hoi An Weather by Season

Decmber to April : Pleasant and Comfortable

This is one of the most comfortable times to explore Hoi An.

The weather is usually warm without being excessively hot, making it ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

It is a great season for:

  • Walking around Hoi An Ancient Town
  • Cycling through the countryside
  • Visiting My Son Sanctuary
  • Exploring Tra Que Vegetable Village
  • Taking a basket boat ride in Cam Thanh
  • Enjoying local food

May – July: Hot and Sunny

These months are generally hot and sunny.

If you enjoy beaches and outdoor activities, this can be an excellent time to visit.

You can combine a visit to Hoi An Ancient Town with:

  • An Bang Beach
  • Cam Thanh Coconut Village
  • Tra Que Vegetable Village
  • Cham Islands
  • Countryside cycling tours

It is best to plan outdoor activities in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the strongest midday heat.

August – September: Hot with Increasing Rain

The weather can be hot and humid, with more frequent rain.

There are still plenty of sunny days, so you can enjoy your trip, but it is a good idea to keep your itinerary flexible.

October – November: Rainy Season

Hoi An receives more rainfall during these months.

Heavy rain can occasionally cause flooding in low-lying areas of the Ancient Town. However, rainy-season travel can also be rewarding.

The streets can be quieter, accommodation may be more affordable, and the lantern-lit Ancient Town can have a particularly atmospheric feel after the rain.

If you travel during this period, check the weather forecast and allow some flexibility in your itinerary.

What About the Hoi An Lantern Festival?

The Hoi An Lantern Festival is held on the 14th day of each lunar month.

During the festival, the Ancient Town becomes especially beautiful as electric lights are reduced and colorful lanterns illuminate the streets.

If experiencing the lantern festival is important to you, check the lunar calendar before booking your trip.

So, When Should You Visit Hoi An?

For the best combination of comfortable weather and outdoor activities, consider visiting from Decmber to April

For sunny beach days, May to July can be a good choice.

If you don't mind rain and prefer a quieter experience, the rainy season from October to November can also be an interesting time to discover Hoi An.

Ultimately, there is no single "perfect" time to visit Hoi An. Each season offers a different experience.
